Smart gadgets are easy to buy and hard to make work
Most people's smart home is a light here, a plug there, three different apps, and half of it forgotten because it kept dropping off the wi-fi. The devices are the easy bit. Getting them onto a reliable network, into one app, and set up so they trigger each other on their own is where it comes good, and where most DIY setups fall apart. I am an IT technician first, so the network underneath is solid before a single automation goes on top.

Automation is far more useful when it talks to your security. I can link your smart home in with your CCTV cameras and alarm, so lights come on when a camera spots movement and you get the whole picture in one app. It all rides on a proper home network, which is why I sort the wireless network first.
